And then there are times when an ultrasound is simply wrong.When it was time to find out the gender of her baby, Madeleshia Hiscock had three ultrasounds showing that she was having a baby girl, but when she went in for a fourth scan, the technician informed her that they had been mistaken and she was having a baby boy. This name came as a shock, as Hiscock had a gut feeling that she was having a girl.As to be expected, the couple was a bit disappointed since they had been planning for a daughter and even picked out a name, along with girl-appropriate items. But like most parents, they were simply happy to welcome the baby into the world, whether it was a boy or a girl.“Even when he was born the doctors said Kenny was a boy. We had been buying blue baby grows and toy cars for weeks,” Hiscock said. “Our first child Zadeleshia was a girl so we were really excited to be having a boy and had got everything ready.”When baby Kenneth arrived, the family was happy to welcome the baby boy considering they had a girl already. After he was born, they went about life as usual, but they always sensed that something was off with baby Kenny. This intuition was confirmed when the baby was five months old. Doctors discovered that Kenny had a rare disorder known as congenital adrenal hyperplasia, which is a group of inherited genetic disorders that affect the adrenal glands. Individuals with CAH don’t have the enzymes that “the adrenal glands use to produce hormones that help regulate metabolism, the immune system, blood pressure and other essential functions.The couple then found out that baby Kenny was actually a girl.“It felt like our baby’s sex was changing every other minute, but I didn’t expect there to be a problem after the birth,” said Hiscock, who was completely confused after the diagnosis. Kenneth’s name was changed to McKenzi and her birth certificate was adjusted.While there is no cure for CAH, there are treatment options available, but since McKenzi is still so young, it’s hard for doctors to determine the severity of the disorder.“We are now seeing what medical help we can get her to make her life as normal as possible,” said Madeleshia. “The doctor told us her condition is extremely rare.
