In 2011, during the Billabong Pro Tahiti World Tour event waiting period, the biggest swell in decades slammed Teahupoo. It was so big and so dangerous it was only marginally rideable, even with Jet Ski assist. The morning tow session saw Nathan Fletcher survive falling into the maw of arguably the ugliest wave in Teahupoo history, Bruce Irons get his boardshorts ripped clean off when he went down on the following mutant wave, and Laurie Towner somehow navigate a half-dozen of the heaviest left slabs anyone has ever ridden. And while the session belonged to the big-wave contingent, there were also a couple of ‘CT surfers that put on a surprising show.
