Several schools item in state budget

Up against a second deadline, legislators passed the state biennial budget with provisions focusing on several facets of education throughout the state. After passing a 17-day interim budget — the first time since 2009 the Legislature has missed its June 30 deadline — the House and Senate concurred with the compromises that came out of Conference Committee on Tuesday evening. Those compromises include language halting state takeovers of failing school districts for the next year, shoring up graduation requirements and taking the first steps to change state report cards.
