Defendant in fatal East Bay DUI pleads no contest to murder, avoids trial

MARTINEZ — Days before his murder trial was about to start, Jose Amaya-Rivera threw in the towel. A 42-year-old Pittsburg resident, Amaya-Rivera pleaded no contest Monday to second-degree murder stemming from a fatal car crash last year, accepting a prison term of life with parole eligibility after 15 years. His victim, 21-year-old Yvonne Magdaleno, was a passenger in his car when he crashed on Highway 4.
