NEW ORLEANS — Dr. John passed away Thursday morning from a heart attack. The music legend won six Grammy awards and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011. Dr. John was born as Malcolm John Rebennack in 1941. He grew up in the 3rd ward surrounded by music. That inspired his musical career which began in the late 1950's as a prominent pianist and singer. He gained recognition as a solo performer with the release of his album Gris-Gris in 1968.
