Brands Have the Power to Chip Away at Mental Health Stigma, but They’re Not Using It

May is Mental Health Month, and it seems that not long ago, the topic of mental wellness would be considered taboo in casual conversation, let alone public discourse. Some sobering statistics are forcing us to re-evaluate the stigma that comes with mental health-related issues. According to the National Alliance on mental illness, 6.9% of adults in the U.S.—16 million—had at least one major depressive episode in the past year, while 18.1% of adults in the U.S. experienced an anxiety disorder such as post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and specific phobias. Despite percentages like these, only 41% of adults in the U.S. with a mental health condition received mental health services in the past year.
