Names like SZA, Lizzo, Kehlani, Solange, Ari Lennox, Summer Walker and Ariana Grande are all synonymous with a hip-hop-flavored neo-R&B sound that’s ubiquitous in the post-genre playlist culture of today’s youth music market. Not many of those singers were even born when when then-upstart singer Mary J. Blige was breaking ground on that style with her 1992 debut What’s the 411? and her critical breakthrough follow-up My Life in 1994.
