Lookback: Week of April 15 to April 22

• The closure of Plattsburgh Air Force Base has begun. With a mighty roar of engines, the first plane leaves for good on April 20. For some people, the thought of leaving is hard to bear. “I love it here,” said Mitch Gomes, a senior master sergeant who will have spent all 20 years of his Air Force career at PAFB. Rather than get sent to another base, he will retire when the base closes in October 1995. “The people are great. We live here, and my kids love it here, and this is where we’ll stay,” he said.
