Her hands are stained red with the oil of palm nuts. From soap making, I imagine — the large metal basin she stores in the back of the taxicab suggests that too — but after months here I am still naïve; I won’t truly know. She is squeezed next to me in the front of the car, the two of us small enough to allow one seat to carry two. My youth next to her wisdom. Her soft wrinkled skin next to my own.
